Importance of gardening in our life
The definition of garden can mean something different to different people. Gardening is more than just preparing a section of your yard for growing vegetables or flowers. It can also offer many other benefits such as helping the environment or providing stress relief by taking care of home gardens.
You might think, What is the importance of gardening in our life. Gardening gives people a place to go putter around in nature and forget about their troubles for a while, and at the end they have delicious fresh vegetables or beautiful flowers. Home gardens are easy to create and you don’t necessarily need a huge plot of land. If you want, for instance just to spruce up your windows with a flower box, that could be considered as your little garden. Plus the flowers could provide nectar for the bees or butterflies, so you are also helping out nature.
You can even have a small garden if you live in an apartment, especially if you have a balcony. All you need to do is get a few large containers, some dirt, seeds or baby plants, then add some water and fertilizer and a little love and care. You don’t need a lot of bulky gardening tools. A simple small shovel or even a kitchen fork or spoon can be used to plant your small garden. Then, Voila! You have your own little piece of nature and can grow delicious veggies or beautiful flowers, it’s up to you.
If you do have a large area to make into a garden. You could even choose to make something like a tree nursery to help grow needed trees to help the environment. Trees and other plants take in the carbon dioxide in the air and give off oxygen, so the more trees the better so we have fresher air to breathe.
Why do we need gardens?
These days it is easy for some people to ask, why do we need home gardens when you can just go to the grocery store and buy vegetables?. Well for one thing home grown vegetables taste a lot better than the ones you buy in the store. And when you do gardening at home, you don’t have to worry about nasty chemicals getting onto your food. All you need is a section of the yard, a few basic gardening tools like a hoe, rake, small shovel and some seeds or baby plants to get started.
Plus, it’s a great way to show kids where their food comes from and help them to love vegetables because they get the fun out of growing them. With the rise in obesity these days, gardening is a way to make eating vegetables fun, plus working in home gardens helps to burn off calories. Some schools have started having a small garden for kids to tend to. And these are not only teaching the kids about nature, but also are helping to stamp out hunger since they get to eat what they produce.
Another reason we need gardens is simply because they are beautiful. Who doesn’t like to see fields of sunflowers or other lovely flowers or smell the perfume of their scents. And if we plant flowers that attract bees and other pollinators, we are again helping the environment and saving bees from extinction. Without bees we wouldn’t even have much of the plants we eat and that would be disastrous.

Another great thing about gardening is that it can help relieve stress in several ways. Studies have shown that working in home gardens can lessen the formation of the stress hormone cortisol. One study showed that 30 minutes of gardening was better at relieving stress than 30 minutes of reading.
Gardening invoked positive moods in the study participants and they liked being out in nature, smelling the dirt, and working with their hands. An added benefit was that the gardening process helped the people get some exercise too, and exercise is known to release endorphins, which are the happy hormones that get rid of stress.
Did you know that sunlight can help to improve someone’s mood?. Sunlight helps prevent Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is a condition where we don’t get enough sunlight or Vitamin D. It occurs mostly in the winter or in places in the world where there isn’t a lot of sunlight for months at a time like Alaska. So, getting out and working in home gardens or a nursery of plants is a great way to get the Vitamin D our body needs to live healthy.
Gardening also helps people get in touch with nature. It gets you away from that phone you seem to be attached to 24/7 or the TV. It can even get you back in touch with other humans for a change if you get your family involved. Or if you start a neighborhood garden to get your neighbors involved you can make new friends and share the bounty of fresh veggies or beautiful flowers.
And speaking of beautiful flowers, it’s a known fact that viewing beautiful things helps people to relax and unwind after a hard day at work or school. You can walk around in your garden, listen to the birds or bees, smell the flowers, and enjoy the colorful red of your tomatoes, the green from a watermelon on the vine or the orange of a pumpkin or cantaloupe. There’s a lot to see and do and having a garden or nursery is a lot more meaningful than just a means to get the makings of a salad!
Doing gardening has been shown to do things like bring down the blood pressure, lower cholesterol. It also helps in getting rid of muscle tension, and invoke more electrical activity in the brain. The colors and textures of gardening products or working with gardening tools has been shown to bring on calmness, peaceful feelings and happy thoughts and emotions. Therefore, it can also be considered as a form of therapy to help both our body and our soul.
Gardening is also good for other benefits
Gardening can also bring up your property value. If you have a well-manicured lawn, pretty flowers lining your walkway and a couple of nice shady trees then people are going to be more attracted to buying your home than if you have a bare yard full of weeds or dirt. So, if you are looking to sell your home, put in a flower garden or a nursery of sorts with some pretty bushes and you’ll get a lot more potential buyers.
Another way gardening benefits your home is that it can help with cooling your yard in the summer and warming it in the winter, depending on the type of landscaping you grow. The group Plants for Clean Air Council says that energy efficient type of home landscaping reduces energy costs by around 20 percent.
How does this work?
Trees and other types of plants help to lower surface as well as air temperature because they can provide shade, as well as moisture when they go through a process called transpiration. Transpiration is a process where the plant exhales water through the pores in their leaves.
For every tree you plant it helps to cancel out carbon emissions, and that means less greenhouse gases that heat up the planet. So if you incorporate a few trees as part of your home gardening you will be helping to save the planet in your own little way. Especially if you only use organic fertilizing methods and stay away from harmful chemicals and pesticides.
You can make your own organic fertilizer for your veggies, flowers or trees by creating a compost heap, or even something simpler. If you have a fish tank you can water your plants with some of the water from the fish tank when you clean your tank, as that water contains fish poop and other nutrients. And if you are having trouble with pests like aphids, you can get some ladybugs as they eat those pests and are considered as good bugs to have in home gardens.
Home gardens can also invoke a feeling of self-satisfaction because you took some tiny little seeds and nurtured them into mature plants that provided you with food, and something beautiful to look at. And you likely provided a home or food for animals like bees, butterflies or hummingbirds too.
